Orals
The
secrets of teaching oral presentation skills |
|
|
|
Oral
presentations are becoming an increasingly important part
of the School Curriculum forming a significant
component of English, Geography, Legal Studies, Study of
Religion, Economics and other subjects.
Teaching
Orals is a practical short course showing proven
ways of teaching oral presentation skills to students. It
is based on over fourteen years of teaching these skills by Adrian Pauley and Kevin Ryan, authors
of a range of books for teaching
communication skills in the classroom.
Experienced teachers
have said that there is no faster way to improve a student’s
confidence and grades than to enhance their oral
presentation skills. This is what some of them have said
about this course -
"I
have learned some very valuable things that I
could easily use in the classroom."
"I appreciated the ideas on short
speeches that the students would find non- threatening. I can see how confidence
could be built." |
|
For most students, the oral
presentation is a 'high risk' assignment. They
are given a criteria sheet, a subject and a time
that they will be expected to deliver it to the
class. The criteria sheet, as often as not, gives
the student specific detail about what they have to
speak about, but is very vague when explaining how
the presentation should be delivered. The students
are given little guidance in preparing to deliver
with confidence.
This program takes a different approach with
classroom exercises to teach the students the basic
skills and how to practise them before any
assignments are set. This gives students the best
chance of a successful, confidence-building
experience.
